Chelsea's miracle at the Camp Nou

Chelsea produced one of the greatest escapes in the history of European football tonight as they survived the sending off of John Terry to win an astonishing Champions League semi-final with Barcelona.

On a night of unparalleled drama at the Nou Camp, Terry looked to have pressed the self-destruct button on the Blues' hopes of glory on the continent when he saw red for kneeing Alexis Sanchez from behind.

But the 10 men were simply magnificent for the rest of the second leg, fighting back from goals from Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta with a stunning chip from Ramires before half-time.

And after surviving a Barca siege from start to finish that saw Lionel Messi miss a penalty, Fernando Torres came off the bench to score a stoppage-time breakaway goal as Chelsea avenged their 2009 defeat in the most dramatic manner possible.

Reaching their second final came at a huge cost, with Terry's red card and yellows for Ramires, Branislav Ivanovic and Raul Meireles ruling them out of the final.

But they will worry about that in the morning after celebrating arguably the greatest result in the club's history and one which may finally convince Roman Abramovich to make Roberto Di Matteo's appointment as manager permanent.

Disaster struck for Chelsea as early as the sixth minute, Gary Cahill eventually forced off after slipping and pulling his hamstring, with Jose Bosingwa coming on and Ivanovic forced to move to centre-back.

It was soon 1-1 on the injury front, Gerard Pique lasting just 26 minutes of his recall after failing to recover from a sickening collision with the backside of Victor Valdes that appeared to leave him briefly unconscious.

That failed to alter the pattern of a game which was a carbon copy of the first leg as Chelsea parked the bus once more.

Messi rippled the side-netting inside three minutes and, after both sides' injury woes, he should have opening the scoring in the 20th minute, firing a one-two with Cesc Fabregas against Petr Cech's leg.

Fabregas also volleyed into the sidenetting and Cech tipped over Javier Mascherano's drive but there was hope for Chelsea before Pique's departure when Didier Drogba shrugged him off but could himself only find the side-netting from the tightest of angles.

The first sign of Chelsea's discipline wavering came when John Obi Mikel was booked for chopping down Alexis Sanchez in the 32nd minute.

And when they went to sleep three minutes later, they were behind, their failure to close down allowing Isaac Cuenca to square for Busquets to tap into a virtually unguarded net.

The build-up to this tie was dominated by talk of refereeing meltdowns in previous clashes but Terry simply gave Cuneyt Cakir no choice but to dismiss him less than two minutes later.

Sanchez over-reacted to the swipe, bringing back memories of David Beckham's 1998 World Cup sending-off, and Terry initially refused to walk.

But Cech made him listen to reason before picking the ball out of his own net again two minutes before half time, Chelsea carved apart as Messi teed up Iniesta to stroke the ball home.

Chelsea looked dead and buried but, as at Stamford Bridge, they struck a dagger blow with their first shot on target in first-half stoppage-time.

Frank Lampard was again the creator as Ramires burst through and floated a glorious finish over Valdes - moments after picking up a booking that would rule him out of the final.

The cascade of noise that had filled the Nou Camp turned to silence at half-time but they were soon cheering again after the restart when Drogba conceded a penalty.

Cakir adjudged the striker had tripped Fabregas and pointed to the spot, with Ivanovic cautioned for his protest.

It looked certain Messi would end his Chelsea hoodoo but, incredibly, he smashed his effort against the crossbar.

Lampard was fortunate to escape punishment for a flare-up with Fabregas, Sanchez nodded substitute Daniel Alves' cross wide, and Cech was booked for timewasting having already been warned before saving well again from Cuenca.

Ivanovic almost capitalised after Drogba helped Chelsea win a rare corner but he was warned himself after going down theatrically, while Lampard was lucky to only see yellow for cutting down Fabregas after Messi was booked for tugging him back.

The visitors were hanging on and were given two lifelines in 60 seconds in the final 10 minutes when Sanchez had a goal ruled out for offside and Messi hit the post from 20 yards.

With time running out, Meireles was ruled out of the final after being booked for fouling Mascherano, who Cech saved from again in the final minute.

And then, in stoppage-time, a long clearance found substitute Torres with 50 yards of space in which to run.

Unlike most of his Chelsea career, he made no mistake, rounding Valdes and slotting home to jubilant scenes.

Manchester United come unstuck as Toffees fight back

Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead in the final seven minutes as Everton blew the Premier League title race wide open by forcing an incredible 4-4 draw at Old Trafford.

Instead of setting the scene for an ultimate revenge act at the Etihad Stadium on April 30, United will meet Manchester City knowing they cannot afford to lose if a calamity even greater than the one that unfolded here is not to take place.

Behind to Nikica Jelavic's header, United twice established winning positions as Danny Welbeck and Nani sandwiched a Wayne Rooney double.

But Everton refused to surrender to what seemed like the inevitable defeat.

Marouane Fellaini had already offered a warning before Rooney struck the 180th goal of his United career and 33rd of the season, just one short of his highest haul.

But when Jelavic grabbed another, the hosts allowed Steven Pienaar far too much space inside the United box a couple of minutes later and the midfielder duly buried the goal that could provide the turning point in a season filled with so many amazing results.

Though it had been almost 20 years since Everton's last success on this ground, this was always viewed as a key game

With 10 points from their last 12, the Toffeemen represented a formidable obstacle and the return of Pienaar merely offered more reason for optimism amongst the Manchester City faithful.

And the Merseysiders certainly did City proud, starting on the front foot, defending stoutly and thoroughly deserving their lead when it eventually came.

Jelavic had already sprung the United defence once, early on, when Pienaar sent him through, but David de Gea was equal to the shot.

Leon Osman had a couple of opportunities, Sylvain Distin guided a header wide and United old boy Darron Gibson chanced his arm with a trademark thunderbolt, which flashed wide.

However, United had no answer when Tony Hibbert crossed deep from the right touchline. Jelavic won the aerial duel with Rafael at the far post, lifting his header over De Gea and just inside the goal. It was the £5.5 million man's seventh Everton goal and sixth in six games, emphasising his status as one of the bargain buys of the season.

A wave of anxiety swept around Old Trafford as United fans feared another sizeable chunk was in danger of being carved off what, just a fortnight ago, seemed an impregnable lead.

After a couple of decidedly dodgy penalty awards involving Ashley Young over the past fortnight, it was perhaps no surprise referee Mike Jones was unimpressed when Rafael went down under Osman's challenge, although it did appear to be a foul.

United needed to come up with something fast. And, restored to the starting line-up after a nine-match absence in place of Young, whom Ferguson insisted had not been dropped for disciplinary reasons, Nani provided it.

The Portugal winger curled over a brilliant cross from the left which dropped just over Phil Neville and perfectly for Rooney to head in. In a sense though, an equaliser was neither here nor there. The difference between a two or three point lead largely irrelevant considering City had a better goal difference.

United needed three points. And, in the space of two minutes just before the hour, it seemed they had been secured. Everton complained that Osman was down and in pain when the hosts went in front.

However, they had many chances to nullify any potential danger before Nani showed admirable desire to out-jump Neville on the edge of the area and nod down for Welbeck.

After side-stepping John Heitinga's rash challenge, the youngster calmly curled a superb shot into the top corner. Old Trafford had not stopped celebrating when Welbeck fed Nani, whose chip sailed over Howard and bounced into the empty net.

It should have been all over and still seemed that way despite Fellaini smashing home a brilliant volley and Rooney had soon struck again to restore their two-goal cushion.

In truth, the drama was only just starting. With seven minutes left Jelavic capitalised on unusual hesitancy inside the United penalty area and drove a precise shot into the bottom corner.

Even then, what happened afterwards came with jaw-dropping surprise, Fellaini creating space for himself inside the penalty area before sliding a pass through to an unmarked Pienaar, who planted a first-time shot beyond De Gea. The bedlam of earlier had been replaced by a different kind of mayhem as United tried to get a grip on the calamity that had just unfolded.

Phil Jones and Javier Hernandez were thrown on in a desperate attempt to salvage the situation. But even in five heart-stopping minutes of injury time there was to be no final twist as Tim Howard tipped over Rio Ferdinand's goalbound effort.

Everton's Nikica Jelavic scores the opening goal.

Every game crucial - Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo has praised his Chelsea side's progress over the past few weeks, but insists there is no time to savour their success, with crucial games every few days in the side's pursuit of fourth place in the Premier League.

Roberto Di Matteo has impressed since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas
Di Matteo, who took over at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of March has overseen an upturn in fortunes for the Blues, with positive results in three competitions rescuing a disappointing season for the club.

Although Chelsea are ahead in their Champions League semi-final clash with Barcelona and have also booked a place in May's FA Cup final, they still face continuous hard work in order to secure fourth place in the Premier League and thereupon a place in next season's Champions League.

"Six weeks ago, if anybody would've told you that we were in this position now, we would've been very happy. We had the belief and we knew that we had the quality in our team as well,'' said Di Matteo, ahead of Saturday's clash with London rivals Arsenal.

"There is so little time to enjoy these wins. The (FA Cup) semi-final against Spurs was a great win but there was no time to enjoy it, and this one in midweek the same. Because, after the game, you start thinking about Arsenal already."

Regarding the club's hopes of a fourth place finish, the clash at the Emirates on Saturday is crucial for Chelsea hopes, with defeat potentially leaving the Blues five points off the pace by the end of the weekend.

"Unfortunately, we have to play catch-up - that's been from day one. So, every game that we've played in the league is crucial, and this is another one," Di Matteo added, before playing down the effects of tiredness on his squad.

"Psychologically, it feels much better digesting this amount of games when you're winning. That doesn't take away the fact that we're going to play our third game in less than six days. I've been using the squad and I will continue to do so because I think that is the only answer, really, to be able to compete in every game."

Wigan shock misfiring Gunners

Wigan pulled off a shock 2-1 win at Arsenal to boost their Premier League survival hopes.

• Wenger rules Jack Wilshere out of EurosFranco Di Santo fired the Latics - who last week beat leaders Manchester United - ahead on the break after seven minutes, before Jordi Gomez doubled their lead inside 90 seconds.
Thomas Vermaelen reduced the deficit with a bullet header on 21 minutes, but the second-half onslaught from the shellshocked Gunners never came as the Latics moved five points clear of the relegation zone.
It had been a bright start by Arsenal, who were looking to tighten their grip on third place, as Yossi Benayoun forced Ali Al Habsi into a fingertip save from his close-range header.
The Latics had brought a small following of only some 200, who had perhaps travelled more in hope than genuine expectation.
However, it was the visitors who took a shock lead on seven minutes.
Wigan broke quickly from an Arsenal corner through Gomez down the left, who clipped the ball through to the on-rushing Di Santo.
Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny raced to the edge of his area, but was beaten to the ball and the Wigan striker went on to knock into an empty net.
Before the away support had time to calm down, they were in dreamland again less than 90 seconds later.
This time Victor Moses did the damage down the left, turning Bacary Sagna inside out, with his cross not gathered by Szczesny - and Gomez was on hand to scramble the loose ball over the line.
Emirates Stadium was left in stunned silence, with midfielder Mikel Arteta then limping off injured and replaced by Ramsey in the ninth minute.
Arsenal - who had won nine of their last 10 Premier League games - needed a response.
Benayoun was again denied by a fine one-handed save from Al Habsi as he looped Rosicky's cross towards the top corner.
The Gunners halved the deficit on 21 minutes when Vermaelen crashed in a bullet header from 12 yards after Rosicky's right-wing cross.
Al Habsi was alert again to beat away Robin van Persie's fierce drive as Arsenal pressed forward, centre-half Johan Djourou then dragging his shot just wide from the edge of the Wigan penalty area.
Arsenal maintained their momentum, and Rosicky should have done better than sky the ball high over the crossbar after being played in by Van Persie.
Wigan, who were unfortunate to lose at Chelsea amid some controversial decisions, continued to defend deep with two banks of four and made the most of any stoppages - much to the frustration of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
Arsenal came out on the offensive at the start of the second half, with Andre Santos' shot deflecting just away from Van Persie and then Theo Walcott.
Wigan, though, stuck to their game plan of organised defending, while also looking to break quickly down the flanks.
Moses was a real handful for Sagna, and got away again into the Arsenal box on 52 minutes before forcing Szczesny into a reaction save.
Vermaelen headed over from Van Persie's corner, before Santos stabbed a cutback by his captain wide from six yards when he really should have hit the target.
Moses could have extended Wigan's advantage when put through on 59 minutes, but shot tamely at Szczesny.
Wenger had seen enough, replacing Benayoun with Gervinho to inject some fresh life into the attack.
There was then a stoppage as Di Santo and Sagna clashed heads, fortunately both were able to continue.
Arsenal stepped up the pressure again, but once more the Wigan rearguard stood firm.
With 16 minutes left, Wenger sent on teenager Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, sacrificing Djourou as Alex Song dropped into the back four. Wigan responded by replacing Di Santo with Conor Sammon.
Gervinho was switching flanks intermittently, and his ball from the left floated across the face of goal.
Maynor Figueroa appeared to barge Walcott over as the Arsenal forward scampered away down the right, but referee Andre Marriner waved play on.
There was five minutes of stoppage time, but despite plenty of Arsenal pressure, Wigan held out for a deserved win, their first at Emirates Stadium, which could just keep them in the Premier League.

Thomas Vermaelen heads Arsenal back into the game.
